Family Doctor in Vancouver

Promis Medical Centre provides comprehensive family medicine from our clinic in Coal Harbour, downtown Vancouver. Our family physicians care for patients across a wide range of health needs, with a focus on continuity of care, preventive medicine, chronic disease management, and clear communication.

Our goal is to build long-term physician-patient relationships so that your medical history, ongoing concerns, medications, preventive needs, and future health goals can be managed in a coordinated way over time. Promis Medical Centre also offers virtual care for appropriate non-emergency concerns when an in-person visit is not required.

Looking for a Family Doctor in Vancouver?

Promis Medical Centre maintains a family-doctor waitlist as physician capacity becomes available.

As of the latest update, priority is being given to patients located in:

  • Downtown Vancouver

  • Vancouver

  • North Vancouver

  • West Vancouver

  • Burnaby

Availability changes as physicians accept new patients, so registration on the waitlist does not guarantee immediate attachment to a family physician. Please follow the registration process below rather than calling or emailing the clinic regarding waitlist status.

What Does a Family Doctor at Promis Medical Centre Provide?

Family physicians at Promis Medical Centre provide primary medical care for a broad range of health concerns. Depending on your individual needs, family medicine may include:

  • Routine medical care and check-ups

  • Preventive health discussions and age-appropriate screening

  • Management of chronic medical conditions

  • Medication review and ongoing prescription management

  • Women's health

  • Men's health

  • Children's and adolescent health

  • Mental-health concerns within primary care

  • Review of laboratory and diagnostic results

  • Referrals to specialists when medically appropriate

  • Follow-up after hospital, emergency-department, or specialist care

  • Lifestyle and risk-factor counselling

  • Coordination with allied-health professionals where appropriate

Our physicians have different clinical interests and areas of experience. You can learn more about the current medical team on our Team page.

Why Continuity of Care Matters?

Having an ongoing relationship with a family physician can make it easier to monitor changes in your health over time. Your family doctor can become familiar with your medical history, medications, family history, previous test results, and personal health priorities.

Continuity of care can also support better coordination when you need laboratory testing, imaging, specialist referrals, chronic-disease follow-up, or care from other healthcare professionals.

At Promis Medical Centre, we are dedicated to providing the highest quality medical care and service to our patients.

What Happens After I Join the Waitlist?

When a physician has capacity and your place on the waitlist is reached, Promis Medical Centre may contact you to arrange an initial meet-and-greet appointment. A meet-and-greet appointment does not mean that you have been accepted as a patient or that you officially have a family physician.

The purpose of the appointment is to give you and the potential family physician an opportunity to meet, review your medical history, discuss your current health needs, and determine whether the physician-patient relationship is a good fit for both sides.

During the appointment, the physician may review your medical background, current medications, ongoing health concerns, previous medical care, and any significant chronic conditions or follow-up needs.

If both you and the physician are comfortable proceeding after the meet-and-greet, the clinic can then confirm whether you will be formally accepted into that physician’s family practice.

It is important to attend your scheduled meet-and-greet appointment. Missed appointments may be subject to the clinic’s current missed-appointment policy and may affect your position on the waitlist.

Can I Use the Virtual Clinic While Waiting for a Family Doctor?

Yes. Promis Medical Centre currently offers a Virtual Clinic for eligible non-emergency medical concerns by phone or video.

Virtual care may be useful for certain acute concerns, follow-up questions, and medical issues that do not require a physical examination. However, some conditions are better assessed in person, and the virtual physician may recommend an in-person examination when appropriate.

The Virtual Clinic currently does not provide refills for opioids or ADHD medications and does not complete disability or fit-to-work forms for walk-in patients. Current policies should be reviewed before booking.

Do You Accept In-Person Walk-In Patients?

No. Promis Medical Centre currently does not accommodate unscheduled in-person walk-in physician visits.

Patients seeking walk-in care are directed to the Promis Virtual Clinic. All in-person physician appointments must be scheduled in advance.

Can I Register My Family Members?

Each person who wants to become a patient should complete the required registration process and provide the information requested by the clinic.

Availability depends on physician capacity, and being on the same household does not necessarily guarantee that all family members will be attached at the same time.

What Should I Bring to My First Appointment?

For your first appointment with a family physician, it can be helpful to have:

  • Your BC Services Card / Personal Health Number

  • A list of current medications and supplements

  • Relevant medical history

  • Previous specialist information if available

  • Recent laboratory or imaging reports if they are not already accessible

  • A list of important health concerns you would like to discuss

Avoid trying to address a very large number of unrelated issues in a single appointment. Your physician may recommend additional appointments so each concern can be assessed appropriately.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Promis Medical Centre accepting new family-practice patients?

Promis Medical Centre maintains a waitlist and accepts patients as physician capacity becomes available. The number of available spaces and geographic priorities may change, so the live Family Doctor page should always be checked for the most current information.

Do I need a referral to join the family-doctor waitlist?

No referral requirement is currently stated on the Family Doctor page. Patients join the waitlist through the clinic's online membership and registration process.

Can I choose which family physician I see?

Physician availability depends on the clinic's current capacity. Patients can review physician profiles on the Team page, but assignment to a particular physician should not be assumed unless confirmed by the clinic.

Can I see a doctor while I am waiting?

For eligible non-emergency concerns, you may use Promis Medical Centre's Virtual Clinic while waiting for permanent family-doctor attachment.

Does Promis provide care for children?

The clinic states that its family physicians provide care for patients of different ages, and several physician profiles list pediatrics or maternal-child care among their interests. Specific physician availability should be confirmed with the clinic.

Does Promis provide women's health services?

Yes. Promis lists women's health among its medical services, including prenatal care, contraception counselling, IUD insertion, and contraceptive implants.

Can virtual appointments replace a family doctor?

Virtual care can be useful for certain non-emergency concerns, but it does not replace the benefits of an ongoing primary-care relationship or an in-person examination when one is medically necessary.

What happens if I miss my meet-and-greet appointment?

The current Family Doctor page states that missed meet-and-greet appointments can result in a private fee and movement to the bottom of the waitlist. Review the live page for the current fee schedule.

How will I know when a family doctor becomes available?

Promis Medical Centre contacts patients as waitlist spaces become available. Make sure the email address and contact information associated with your Promis account remain current.
