Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS)

IMS is a technique used to release tight, spastic, painful muscles. There are many causes for muscle tightness such as: muscle/joint strain, repetitive postures and movements, chronic illnesses, trauma, and inflammation.
This technique involves the insertion of fine needles into tight portions of muscles, known as trigger points. These trigger points cause muscles to shorten. Shortened muscles compress joints and limit blood flow, resulting in pain, spasm and reduced motion. Trigger points do not respond as well to stretching or massage.

Patients can feel a twitch, grasp or deep achy sensation. No solution is added with this
technique, hence another name commonly used is dry needling, ie. the needle is inserted into the muscle band, a twitch or ache response occurs, the needle is removed. The needle is not left in the muscle for any length of time. Multiple insertions may be made as the therapist releases different bands in the muscle or in different muscle groups.
IMS is a restricted technique in Canada. It requires intensive, specific training, specialization and examination process. Results can also be a measure of practitioner expertise and years of experience. A certification is mandatory to administer IMS. The most common IMS training in Vancouver is GunnIMS, named after Dr. Chan Gunn, who formulated this technique in Vancouver decades ago. Renata has had over a decade of experience using IMS as a fundamental skill-set for her patients.

Manual Therapy

This technique uses hands on skills to restore range of motion, decrease muscle spasm and reduce pain. Joint oscillations, or rocking movements, manipulations, traction/distraction, stretching and massage, are forms of manual therapy.
As a member of the Federation of Manual and Manipulative Therapists, Renata has been educated and examined rigorously over a 5 year period to obtain this special designation. She has the expertise and years of experience to perform these techniques in a safe and effective way.

Exercise Prescription

Creating a specific exercise protocol tailored to your goals and needs is essential for optimal recovery and health. The most relative and research based forms of strength and conditioning are incorporated into a program that is right for you.
